Sitting between Old Oakland, Lake Merritt, and the 880 freeway, Oakland’s Chinatown is a bustling nabe full of small groceries, great restaurants, and bakeries. Less touristy than the Chinatowns of other cities, Oakland's Chinatown caters to locals from all around the East Bay. The commercial area from Broadway to Harrison Streets is dense with pedestrians and delivery trucks. East of Harrison Street, the nabe takes on a more urban residential character. A BART station connects Chinatown to San Francisco and other East Bay nabes.
mmm… Chinatown, the perfect place for authentic Asian cuisine. However, you have to navigate a gauntlet of obstacles to get to it. The traffic is horrendous in this dense neighborhood that’s close to the heart of Oakland. It’s easy to get turned around for several minutes thanks to the proliferate one-way streets. Once you finally spot the restaurant you’ve been looking for among the clustered shops with all their signs printed in Chinese, be prepared to spend another 15 minutes looking for parking. Also be prepared to park on a shady lookin side street and hope your car doesn’t get assaulted while you’re enjoying your meal. But when you do finally get there, the food is good, prices are reasonable, service is friendly, and maybe you can even stop by a couple shops for some cheap and unique groceries.
