Uptown is quickly becoming the hippest nabe in Oakland with a vibrant entertainment and nightlife scene. Sitting in Downtown Oakland, Uptown’s new crop of pretty restaurants, stylish bars, and edgy art galleries give the impression that something really cool is happening here. The restored Fox Theater and glamorous, Egyptian art deco Paramount serve as concert venues and anchor Uptown's smaller nightclubs. New condo and loft developments make Uptown an urban, transit-friendly alternative to Oakland’s more established residential nabes.
Uptown is where the residential ends and the business begins, so you can forget about finding parking here- although it’s very close to BART. As with any business district, there are tons of cafes, but the majority of the buildings are big, shiny, and important-looking mysteries to me. The infamously addictive Bakesale Betty that is better known for its Temescal location has spawned a clone here on Broadway and Grand. It’s just as savory as the mothership, although the hours are severely limited. As for nightlife, The Uptown is the best bar/club type of venue, and the Oakland Art Murmur is where hordes of hipsters flock once a month to play amongst the galleries, food trucks, live performances, and street vendors. Oh yeah, don’t forget about catching a live show at the Fox Theatre. All said and done, this is a pretty happening place to visit.
