Ever since moving to the Eastside, I’ve fallen in love with Pasadena and just about everything it has to offer. Previously, I’d only been here for a couple games at the Rose Bowl (why must UCLA be so far from its home stadium??) and the occasional outing to the ginormous flea market. But now, Pasadena is only a quick Metro ride away (Gold Line ftw), and it has become my new favorite weekend destination.
For first timers, I’d definitely recommend visiting Old Town Pasadena – it’s a beautiful area right where the 134 meets the 210, perfect for dates or an evening out with friends. There are tons of dining and nightlife options, as well as all the hip clothing stores (Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Banana Republic, etc.). You’ll find great shopping all along Colorado Blvd., as well as on Lake Blvd. for the PCC and CalTech peeps.
As far as housing goes, Pasadena’s pretty much got it all. Near the shopping hubs you’ll find trendy lofts and apartments, and further north there are some beautiful old Craftsman houses. The only thing I wish Pasadena had more of is parks…for being such a big and beautiful town, you’d think there’d be a bit more emphasis on public parks. But oh well…you can always visit the gardens at the Huntington, which are a little out of the way but totally worth it.
My favorite places:
- Vroman’s Bookstore (if you like books AT ALL, go. here. now.)
- Piccomolo – amaaaazing gelato!
- Paseo Colorado – nice outdoor shopping mall
- Pasadena Public Library – it’s beautiful!!
Pasadena is huge, so if there a lot of destinations you want to hit up, you’ll likely have to drive a car or take the Metro
