The Richmond District is a mirror of the Sunset District, its counterpart to the South. Homes here are modest in size and residents enjoy convenient access to Golden Gate Park, the Presidio and Ocean Beach. Subdivided into the Inner and Outer Richmond, the nabe is home to a diverse community creating very distinct pockets of culture, like one part that is often referred to as Little Russia.
In the Richmond District you’ll find the best of everything: dim sum (Ton Kiang), Mexican food (Tommy’s Mexican), pizza (Gaspare’s), bakeries (Russian Bakery, John Campbell’s Irish Bakery), crab (Dungeness Island), and many many more.
It’s great for young people:
affordable rents, neighborhood bars, tons of muni and express buses, produce markets and liquor stores, greasy spoons, late night dining
It’s great for families:
good public schools, many parks and beaches nearby, Joe’s Ice Cream Shop, Karate Studios, YMCA, Richmond Recreation Center, 4-Star movie theater
It’s great for seniors:
Neighborhood center, flat terrain, Self-Help for the Elderly Center, YMCA
If you really want a sense of community and safety, the Richmond is a really great place. It’s quiet, but lively, not central, but very accessible, and full of secret eateries and shops for relatively cheap prices.
