If money were no object…sigh

Belmont Hill is one of those neighborhoods you stumble upon and it renders you absolutely gape-mouthed and incredulous at the unfairness of your lineage. “WhoLIVES here?!” You demand, to no one in particular, as you pass gate after gate, leading to mansion after mansion. You’ll never know, and the people living here pay a lot of money to keep it that way.

The nabe itself is, as its name suggests, built on a hill in the town of Belmont. At the top of the hill is the impossibly preppy Belmont Hill School for boys, where young men in suits and ties are groomed for success in business, politics, and society. If they don’t already live in one of Belmont Hill’s castles, someday they will.

Many of the homes in Belmont Hill have interesting histories, and their beauty is undeniable. In the summer months, yards are painstakingly landscaped; for the holidays, doorways are fastidiously decorated. It’s a neighborhood that anyone would be proud to call home, and several prominent Bostonians (including everyone’s favorite scary republican Mitt Romney) do just that.

Residents need only put their Jags and Rovers into neutral and cruise to the bottom of the hill in order to shop, eat, and mix with the proletariat. Shopping offerings include several upscale clothing boutiques, a Macy’s, and a couple of grocery stores/pharmacies.

Getting around Belmont Hill sort of necessitates a car, though greater Belmont is served by MBTA bus and commuter lines.

The Burbs

The first time I visited Belmont Hill, I was a junior in high school and I was attending the football game of my then boyfriend who went to the ultra preppy Belmont Hill School for boys. I was visiting from my all girl’s school and was much more excited about seeing boys than the town but as we left the city and drove out to Belmont (and when I say “out” I mean it was about a 10 minute drive from downtown Boston—technically the Burbs) my interests began to change as I was met with this lush, green, neighborhoody place-it was definitely strange to come out of the city and be met with this “country” like town. Many years later, I return often to visit with friends who live inBelmont, the less chi chi part of the town but still a lovely neighborhood, if not a little too suburban for my tastes…read: housing developments galore! Belmont Hill has not changed that much although it has been built up more.

Back to the Hill, the school itself was beautiful and the surrounding area was like being in Beverly Hills which is somewhat of a shock when you’re driving in fromAllston. As another review said, you drive past gated “estates” with Jaguars and Porsches somewhat ostentatiously parked in the driveways (although a car is mostly necessary as taking the MBTA is kind of a pain from out here-but it is possible). Money is not presented in a, how shall I say, subtle manner here. In Belmont Hill, if you’ve got it, you flaunt it. This neighborhood feels very “new” and lacks that fuddy duddy old New England feel that more established and prestigious neighborhoods such as Chestnut Hill have. Most of the houses are brand spanking new, front lawns are meticulously groomed and it’s rare to actually see the people who live in these homes.

This all being said, there are some pros of this neighborhood, mainly being space to have a big house and rolling yard if you can afford it. The town also boasts an amazing bird sanctuary (you don’t find that in too many places, do you?). It is a very residential area that would be great for a family but does not boast very many amenities beyond greenery. It is close enough to other areas that offer restaurants, nightlife, shopping etc, however.
