Green Lake Is A Television-esque Neighborhood

Green Lake is like a neighborhood on a PBS show. There’s nice old couples, there’s affluent young families and couples, and most importantly there’s a centerpiece: a lake that can host every imaginable activity one would want from a lake. Swimming, boating, and fishing are popular through the summer and draw fair-sized crowds that shouldn’t be a drawback besides parking.

On the shores a track, nearly three miles long, gets good use from bikers, walkers, joggers, sprinters, roller-bladers, and dogs alike. A basketball course, park, and small theatre also call the banks of Green lake home.

In the Spring or Fall I can’t help but recommend you listen to an album in it’s entirety on the dock at Green Lake. Then walk home on the streets and experience what the absence of sketchiness feels like.

The surrounding neighborhood has nice homes, a market, and plenty of coffee shops to start, end, or pause a day in.

Green Lake is a neighborhood worthy to be a television setting.

A great place to call home… if you can afford!

Greenlake is a beautiful neighborhood with many amenities within walking distance! The most obvious benefit to living here is the lake, which is just under three miles all the way around. Who needs a gym when you can walk/run the lake, use the public basketball courts and baseball diamonds, or even take your toddler for a dip in the kiddie wading pool. Greenlake can be crowded during the summer, parking spots at the lake are near impossible to find at times. However if you scour the nearby neighborhoods you can usually find free parking, but expect to walk a little. There is aPCC grocery store about 3 blocks off the path of the lake that offers delicious local and organic groceries! If you can afford a home in Greenlake and you’re not bothered with parking issues then you may want to call this place home.

Green Lake

Want to raise a family? Well Green Lake is the place. The beautiful lake is surrounded by a wide array of shops, restaurants, schools, and parks. Making this neighborhood one of the most family friendly in all of Seattle. The restaurants, although not on the fancier side of dining, are still delicious and have a great family friendly vibe around them whether it be the terrific Zeek’s Pizza or the Ben and Jerry’s, both of which are located mere seconds from the lake itself. Summertime around Green Lake is hectic in the best way. People swarm to the parks and lake to spend time with family, exercise, and just have a good time. The lake has a 2.8 mile walking/biking path that, when the sun comes out, is packed with people eager to spend time outside. Green Lake is a great, family friendly place that, if you are looking to raise a family, should be strongly considered.

Green Lake is Great for Yuppies

Great Lake is a great neighborhood, but mostly for yuppied in their late 20’s to mid 30’s with young kids. If you are single, Green Lake may not be for you. If you have young kids and go to bed before 11pm, Green Lake could be ideal.

What's awesome

The lake, of course.

What's not so awesome

Highway 99 is busy and can attract some seedier characters.

Green Lake is the heart of Seattle for many. Let the sun shine and the neighborhood comes alive with walkers, skaters, joggers, bicyclists and dog walkers.

Green Lake

I’ve lived in many areas of Seattle, but Green Lake has always been a “holy grail” of sorts, in terms of where I WANTED to live. Now I live here, I don’t ever want to leave! The neighborhood isn’t cheap, but it’s worth a little extra to live right by the lake. Parking can be kind of a pain in the summer, but it’s manageable.

The walking/cycling path around the lake is safe and well maintained, there’s a boat-rental service, and the lake is stocked with… um… trout, I think? I don’t fish, so I’m not sure what else it would be! There are always people—and a whole lot of cute dogs, too—walking, running, cycling, or skating around the lake, and I never feel unsafe there, even quite early in the morning when there are fewer walkers/joggers around.

Nice restaurants and pubs all around the lake, and within walking distance up inWallingford, too. My favorite: Elysian Brewery, Tangletown (the place that used to be the Honey Bear Bakery back in my college days!). Grocery shops—including QFCand Whole Foods—are close by, and Trader Joe’s is just a few minutes drive, down on the edge of the U District.

Essentially, Green Lake is the perfect urban neighborhood. I couldn’t ask for a better place to live.

Green Lake is the hub of activity in North Seattle. With recreation, dining, and nightlife all around, there’s plenty of entertainment to be found. The homes are mostly classic 1920s Craftsman and Tudors, with a few colonials and cape cods thrown in. Green Lake has great access to freeways and attracts a lot of locals on sunny weekends.
