Avon Hill, a small nabe tucked away in Cambridge, is a little piece of pastoral bliss. The park that makes up the majority of the nabe is a real gem and offers everything from sports facilities to one of the best dog parks in Boston. Best Park!
Living in Boston, it’s hard to find a nice, quiet, out of the way park that is still big and fairly unpopulated (sometimes you just want a little peace and quiet, you know?). I know, those are a lot of things to ask. Avon Hill has succeeded though, in Danehy Park. The park is huge and has great biking trails for those who aren’t quite brave enough to cycle down Comm Ave, it’s got more space than you know what to do with, and a dog park that makes me want to go out right now and get a dog. If you have kiddies, there’s a huge playground (or if you just want to pretend you’re a kid, that’s ok too!) that has all of the playground must haves and then some. I love this park and I visit often, generally taking the T to Porter Square and walking but there are also two parking lots on either end of the park.

Lush and Lovely
The majority of the Avon Hill neighborhood is Danehy Park, a sprawling green space that’s equally fun for pets (there’s a great dog park) and their owners. The green extends throughout the nabe, with big leafy streets and front yards. Some streets can be industrial looking and drab, but overall Avon Hill has maintained its lush loveliness.

Single-family homes and shingled mansions line the streets around Danehy Park, and the houses consist mostly of vintage Victorians. The plots these buildings sit on tend to be small, although space between neighbors offers room enough for a small lawn and driveway for one or two cars.
The prestige of owning a home in Avon Hill has slumped a bit over the decades, as a bit of shabbiness has appeared on the sidewalks and exteriors, but the wonderful park at the center of the nabe makes it still a wonderful place to live or visit. Residents tend to be the only ones enjoying the rolling grass hills in Danehy, because it’s rather hard to access from other nabes. It has plenty of room for sports, picnics, jogging and dogs.
