New York City

View all nabes in NYC »

Consider the ridiculous family tree that makes up New York. Five incredibly unique boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and what’s the last one? Ah, Staten Island) each with their own ever-changing personality and vibe. Now, divide all those boroughs into neighborhoods! Nabes here range from fishing villages to quaint suburbia, from gritty industry to towering glass castles in the sky. There’s a good reason this city never sleeps—there are over 200 nabes to check out.

Nightlife in NYC can be found in every corner of this city, if you know where to look. In the Meatpacking District you don't have to look...nightlife slaps you in the face as soon as you step over the border of 9th Avenue. For the most part it's the "see-&-be-seen" crowd with scores of exclusive nightclubs, lounges, and restaurants that have 1.5hrs "wait time" even though you see empty tables behind the gracious hosts. I’ve worked for an internet start-up in Williamsburg for a couple of months and I like it out here. It is a real pain to find a normal sandwich, they tend to be named, organic sandwiches on specialty bread, delicious and expensive, but that is just my provincial tastes shining through. I’ve seen some shows here and my band rehearses here too. I like it here and I also like that if it really came down to it and I had to fight ... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

This is one of my favorite nabes in NYC. It's a lot quieter than its more popular sister neighborhood of SoHo, and this quietness lends it a very haunting quality, especially at night. It's architecture is beautiful as are the people walking its streets. New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission wrote one of the best descriptions of NoHo, "The district...contains early-nineteenth century houses, nineteenth- and twentie... For my money, there's no better neighborhood in NYC than the East Village. It's the most stylish, most vibrant, most lively area in the city - simply the personification of real New York. I don't live in the area, but if I were to pick one neighborhood I'd like to call home, it would be the East Village. This is in large part because I'm addicted to all the great food down there. (For french fries, you have to check out Pomm... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

Nolita, "North of Little Italy," is a small neighborhood sandwiched between SoHo, Chinatown, the Lower East Side and Little Italy. It's not as well-known as its neighbors but it has just as much to offer in the way of restaurants and bars. But lately it has become a hidden hub for some of the city's top-tier, off-the-radar dining options. Rent is pretty high considering the amount of room apartments have to offer, which is not a... It seems like not a day goes by when I don't think to myself "I love where I live". I feel incredibly lucky to live in the W. Village in NYC. It truly has a village feel to it. The tree-lined narrow streets lined with cafes make it feel like the old New York. It's a bit trendy and somewhat snooty in places, but I don't even mind that. There is a sense of history and charm that this neighborhood exudes. It's truly timeless. And t... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

Fort Greene is definitely one of the miracles/tragedies of gentrification, depending on which side of that fence you're on. The streets here are postcard-level gorgeous, and it's right in the middle of brownstone Brooklyn. Though the transformation of the neighborhood is pretty much a fait accompli, gentrification tension is still present. The upside of this is you get an environment that is not just diverse, but where diversity... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

If you want to see New York gentrification on fast forward, this is the place to come. A new place will open and be very welcoming because it wants customers, then in a year there's a velvet rope and bouncer out front. Then a year after that it gets written up somewhere lame, and the the people that come kill the scene. Then the marquis changes, and the cycle continues. There are some great holdouts down here of course, like Max... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

Definitely a place young at heart and in looks. Union Square factors like a piece of glue combining Chelsea and Flatiron from the north, Greenwich Village from the south, and Gramercy from the East. The result is a tree-lined pavement park that regularly hosts a busy farmers’ market as well as impromptu pop-up shops by local artists and young designers. For those looking for a good meal, dining options run the gamut of comme... Read the full review » Quote_bottom

This is one of the most exclusive and beautiful neighborhoods in New York. From historic townhouses to a garden only accessible by residents with a special key, not just anyone is going to be living here. Gramercy is like a little oasis in the heart of the Union Square area. The streets are tree-lined and there are a handful of fine-dining restaurants and the famous Pete's Tavern. There are also a few music venues. For party-goe... Read the full review » Quote_bottom
